What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery, also referred to as minimally invasive surgery, is performed with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments. Small incisions of ½ cm to 1 cm are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through them. The camera and instruments are introduced through the ports, giving access to the abdomen.
The camera transmits an image of the organs onto a monitor — it becomes the surgeon's eyes, guiding every step of the procedure.
